Activity Log - Al Ishraq 2010

Day 7 (Tuesday):

  • Sports Day - Grades 3, 4 & 5
  • Montessori Wall Mural Competition Part 1 (Grades 8 & 9)

Day 6 (Monday):

  • Sports Day - Grade 7 & 8 - cricket and team games
  • Grade 7 Arts activities
  • Teacher meeting and survey

Day 5 (Friday):
  •  Teacher observation (Mr. Farzan)
  • Kindergarten- put up pictures on virgin walls
  • Checked out sports equipment (none left from our 2005 visit)
  • Meeting with Principal Rafeek:
    •  Is he leaving Al Ishraq school and when? – no answer
    • Which classrooms are top priority for painting and floor repair (grade 3 & 6)
  • Pre-planned sports day with Principal Rafeek. We decided on grade 7 & 8. The activities will include
    • Cricket
    • Football
    • Team games

  •  Visit with Raheem’s brother regarding a ‘model’ school near Akkaraipattu and potential teacher training

Day 4 (Thursday):
  • Visit to Tharcel Hasanth Vidyalayam, a primary school in Palamunai- school with the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program
  • Bought sports supply for Sports Day

Day 3 (Wednesday):
  •  Model teach grade 8 (notices) and grade 7 (contractions)
  •   Debrief with teachers regarding big and small group activities, modification of materials in student books, attending to all students in a lesson
  •   Assign teacher homework to teach a lesson with small groups on Friday
  •  Received teacher feedback (Mr. Farzan) about model lesson on Day 2
  • Delivered books and supplies
  • Lunch meeting with the Principal (with interpreter)
  • Visited all of the buildings at Al Ishraq to assess use and state of repair
  • Put up a few pictures in the Kindergarten room

Day 2 (Tuesday):
  • Model teach grade 3 (clothes) & grade 4 (time)
  • Debrief with teachers regarding big and small group activities, preparation of materials for a lesson, difference between receptive and expressive language as well as the difference between echoing and expressive, and finally lesson plans that include 3 components: modeling, guided practice, independent practice


Day 1 (Monday):
  • Met with Mr. Ameer, Principal Rafeek, Farzan and Ansar (the new English teachers)
  • Ongoing request for laptops and internet access
  •  Visit of the classrooms and the English Units (very little teaching)
  • Pottuvil- price paint, visit to Shahab Book Store to buy supplies to teach grade 3 & 4 lessons
  • Meeting with Mr. Raheem who is the chairman of the Arugam Bay Tourist Board and business owner of the ‘ex-hillton’ hotel/restaurant.
